Why Lakeside Is a Major Furniture Shopping Destination

Lakeside Shopping Centre opened on 25 October 1990 in West Thurrock, Essex, on the site of a former chalk quarry. It has 1,434,000 square feet of retail floorspace across three floors and around 245 stores.

Next to the shopping centre sits Lakeside Retail Park – a separate site with large-format stores. This is where almost all the furniture shops Lakeside Retail Park hosts are based, including IKEA, Oak Furnitureland, and Sofology.

Thurrock was once known for quarrying and heavy industry. Retail is now one of its biggest employers, largely because of Lakeside’s scale.

Best Furniture Shops in Lakeside: Quick Comparison

Furniture Stores at Lakeside Thurrock

1. IKEA Lakeside is the obvious starting point if you’re on a budget or furnishing a first home. It’s on Heron Way, within Lakeside Retail Park, and covers pretty much every room in the house at prices that won’t scare you.
2. Designer Furniture Gallery, at Unit 4 on West Thurrock Retail Park, is one of the more overlooked furniture stores at Lakeside Thurrock. It stocks over 40 brands and around 600 display pieces in-store, covering sofas, dining sets, beds, wardrobes, and home accessories. You can shop the same range online at designerfurnituregallery.net if a visit isn’t practical. Orders over £1,000 come with free shipping, and there’s a price match option on stock items too.
3. Oak Furnitureland is the one to visit for solid oak or mango wood pieces built to last. Their Thurrock showroom, on Lakeside Retail Park, is full of dining sets, living room furniture, and sofas.
4. Furniture Village suits people who want to compare several sofa brands – including Nicoletti, G Plan, and The Lounge Co – without driving between shops. The Thurrock branch has had a recent refurbishment and now includes a clearance outlet with discounts up to 50%. Upstairs covers beds, mattresses, and bedroom furniture.
5. Next Home, also in the retail park, is a good middle ground if you want furniture that’s a bit more current without paying designer prices.

Sofa Shops in Lakeside Thurrock

Three stores lead the way when it comes to sofa shopping in the area:

• Sofology (Unit E4) makes handcrafted fabric and leather sofas – the brand started in north-west England back in 1974.
• Furniture Village carries several sofa brands side by side, which makes comparing styles easy.
• Designer Furniture Gallery has a broad sofa range too, from fabric corner sofas to premium Italian-style models, both in-store and online.

Together, these three sofa shops in Lakeside Thurrock cover most budgets and styles, whether you want fast delivery, a specific fabric, or an Italian leather finish. If you’re trying out sofas Lakeside has to offer, sit for at least five minutes rather than just perching on the arm – cushions feel different once you’ve actually settled in.

Bedroom Furniture Lakeside: Beds, Mattresses, and Wardrobes

Bensons for Beds, at Unit D1a, is the main bedroom specialist – mattresses and beds from brands like Slumberland, Silentnight, Sealy, iGel, and Tempur, plus a free in-store sleep assessment if you’re not sure what you need.

Oak Furnitureland and Furniture Village both stock bedroom furniture too – wardrobes, chests, and bed frames, whether you want solid wood or upholstered. Designer Furniture Gallery also has a full bedroom range, including beds, wardrobes, dressers, and bedside tables, across its in-store and online collections.

Whatever you’re buying, comparing two or three retailers before committing to a mattress is worth the extra half hour. Comfort is personal, and prices swing a lot between brands.

Designer Furniture Lakeside: Where to Find Luxury Pieces

Natuzzi Italia (Unit B4) and Calligaris (Unit B3B) are the two big Italian names on the retail park – full living, dining, and bedroom collections built around a consistent look across the room.

For a local alternative with a broader spread of brands, Designer Furniture Gallery is also worth visiting or browsing online – it carries names like Natuzzi and Camel Group alongside its own in-house ranges, so you’re not limited to one brand’s showroom.

Just Outside Lakeside

Dunelm sits at Thurrock Shopping Park, a separate site nearby, if you’re also after bedding, curtains, or home storage while you’re out furniture shopping.

How to Choose the Right Furniture Shop in Lakeside

• Set a budget first – IKEA and Next Home suit tighter budgets; Natuzzi Italia and Calligaris sit at the top end.
• Ask about delivery times – Made-to-order sofas and solid wood furniture often take weeks longer than in-stock pieces.
• Compare warranties – Designer ranges usually come with longer guarantees than budget lines.
• Measure first – Bring exact room and doorway measurements before you shop.
• Ask about finance – Designer Furniture Gallery offers 0% interest on larger purchases, and it’s worth asking at other furniture shops at Lakeside Retail Park too, since financing options vary by store.

Buying Advice From an Interior Design Perspective

• Frame quality matters more than fabric – A solid or kiln-dried frame outlasts the upholstery, which can usually be redone later if needed.
• Order fabric swatches before you commit – Colours on a screen rarely match how fabric looks under your own lighting.
• Plan your layout before you shop – It’s easy to fall for a sofa that ends up blocking a doorway.
• Ask about aftercare – Stain protection and repair services vary a lot between retailers.

Final Thoughts

Lakeside covers nearly every price point in 2026, from IKEA’s flat-pack basics to Natuzzi Italia’s designer Italian sofas, with Designer Furniture Gallery filling the gap in between. Start with your budget and the room you’re furnishing, then shortlist two or three stores before you go.

If you’d rather start browsing from home, Designer Furniture Gallery’s online shop covers the same range you’ll find in their Thurrock showroom – sofas, dining sets, bedroom furniture, and more.
